1. What is provider registration renewal?

Provider registration renewal is the process all registered providers must go through to maintain their registration under the Aged Care Act 2024. It replaces the previous approved provider model and introduces a performance-based approach focused on the quality and safety of the service you deliver. Registration is no longer a one-off event. Providers must renew their registration at the end of each registration period to demonstrate ongoing compliance with the Aged Care Act 2024, the Aged Care Rules 2025 and the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards (for providers in registration categories 4,5,6).

2. Who needs to review?

All registered providers must review their registration before it expires. The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (the Commission) will invite providers to renew their registration up to 18 months before their registration end date.

Providers are placed into registration categories based on the type of services they deliver, which determines the assessment process and whether an audit is required.

3. How does this process work?

The renewal process has five key stages: invitation to renew, preparing your renewal application, the Commission assessment, an audit (if applicable) and the registration decision. The Commission invites providers to renew up to 18 months before their registration expires. At the end of the process, the Commission will decide whether to renew your registration and for what period.

4. What are the registration categories?

Home care providers are placed into categories 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 based on the service they deliver. Providers in Categories 1-3 do not require a registration renewal audit. Categories 4-5 providers must complete a registration renewal audit.

5. Which providers require an audit?

Providers in Categories 4- 5 must complete a registration renewal audit as part of their renewal process. It is recommended that provider review the Audit Evidence Collection Tool (AECT) which assesses your provider level governance, systems and capability, and a Care Delivery Evidence Collection Tool (CDECT) gathers service and consumer level information to inform the quality audit.

6. What is commitment, capability and capacity?

The renewal application asks providers to address three areas that the Commission will assess to determine whether you can deliver safe, high-quality care and services and comply with your obligations.

  • Commitment looks at your governance, leadership and culture.
  • Capability assesses your systems, processes and workforce.
  • Capacity considers your financial sustainability, workforce and resources.

7. When should providers begin preparing

Start preparing as early as possible. Providers are invited up to 18 months before their registration expires, and preparation time will vary depending on your category,
services and circumstances. Early preparation helps you gather evidence, strengthen systems and identify any gaps before you apply.
